About the session
In our first day of the Transforming higher education: digital skills for a digital future conference, we showcased some of the most innovative digital tools that are being used in higher education.
Helen Lockett, Open University, introduces the OpenEngineering Laboratory, part of the Open University’s OpenSTEM Labs that delivers practical learning at a distance to STEM students. The OpenEngineering Laboratory uses digital technologies to allow students to control real engineering equipment via a web browser on their laptop. We have developed experiments across a range of topics including electronics, control, materials and mechanical engineering, allowing students to apply their knowledge of engineering theory to practical problems. The remote laboratory concept allows students to participate in practical work wherever they are and at a time that is convenient to them, maximising the use of resources by offering practical learning on an almost 24/7 basis.
