  • Part of event RPG 2022

About the session

• Following a decade of work and a series of successful operational trials, the power system of Ireland and Northern Ireland can currently be operated safely and securely with up to 75% of the electricity flowing on the grid at any point in time coming from variable non-synchronous renewable sources (e.g. wind, solar).

• Work has now begun on increasing this figure to 95% by 2030 in order in order to achieve government renewable energy targets.

• This will require a significant evolution of the operation of the power system and for EirGrid and SONI to deal with unique challenges that will not be faced in larger more heavily AC interconnected power systems for years to come
