Abstract
In this #EngShort we look at safeguarding the #metaverse. The number of people accessing the metaverse is growing rapidly as is the number of metaverse applications that have a net-positive impact on society. But the metaverse is also giving rise to concerns about its potential downsides. These include risks within #virtual shared social spaces such as #abuse and #harassment. Plus, indications of psychological harms if visits to the metaverse are not done carefully. There can be risks with physical surroundings – accidents and health and #safety mishaps. Some are calling for better #governance and #regulation of our metaverse experiences. It’s an opportunity for us to lead in setting out best-practice guidelines for metaverse use.
