About the session

Sara Walker, University of Birmingham/Hi-ACT. UK

Much of our need for energy is supplied through local distributed energy systems, connected to national systems at key points. Decarbonisation of the energy system is therefore a local as well as a national challenge.

South Wales is the second biggest industrial and power emitter of carbon in the UK, with over 16m tonnes of CO2e per annum. Regional stakeholders have come together, to deliver transformation through the South Wales Industrial Cluster (SWIC). The SWIC aims to: reach net zero by 2040; safeguard more than 100,000 jobs; unlock £30bn investment opportunities; and increase Gross Value Added (GVA) by £6 billion across South Wales industry.
