Straight to the Core: Distance-Based Architectures as a Scaling Strategy for General-Purpose Computers
Hidetsugu Irie, Professor, Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, The University of Tokyo, Japan
This talk introduces STRAIGHT and its family of distance-based architectures we have been developing, which redefine how operands are encoded to enable sustained performance scaling in general-purpose processors. The approach preserves the classical sequential programming model and precise per-instruction semantics while reducing per-instruction renaming overheads and opening new scaling paths. In STRAIGHT, an instruction refers to its sources by their dynamic distance in the instruction stream rather than by architectural register numbers. Our current work ranges from compiler algorithms and code-generation theory to microarchitectural prototypes and ASIC implementations; our primary focus remains general-purpose CPUs, with exploratory extensions to GPU-like engines in parallel.
