Session 2A – Protection of Renewables 1
Session Chair: Richard Adams, Principal Engineer, PSC
The replacement of electro-mechanical machines by inverter-based resources (IBR) is fundamentally changing the dynamics and stability properties of grids. There are exciting opportunities to rethink how flexibility of IBR can be used to enhance grid operation but also impediments to analysis from the black-box nature of proprietary control software. This talk reviews recent progress in stability analysis using impedance spectrum methods for diagnosis and correction of emergent unstable modes. The assessment of metrics used for “system strength” when considering new resource connections will be reviewed and thoughts offered on new metrics. Finally, some thoughts will be offered on protection in low-fault current environments.
