Smart Metering via Wireless - is this a Short-Range or Long-Range Application?

For many applications, it is relatively clear whether they are short or long range, but smart metering could be either, or both. The link from the meter to the grid appears to be long range but could be delivered by short range wireless and longer range broadband. The link from the meter into the home is certainly short-range but might be better served by long-range wireless.
