About the session

Session 7 Keynote: Big Data and Power System Protection: Separating Hype from Reality

Big data and machine learning (ML) have revolutionized applications across a variety of industries over the past several years. Multiple vendors are proposing or producing ML-based applications for power systems, but how well suited is this technology for the power system protection? This presentation will explore some of the operational and structural challenges to developing and implementing ML-based protection applications, while looking forward at potential areas where ML-based methods may hold promise for improved outcomes.
