Abstract
Striking the appropriate balance of reliability and cost to satisfy the public expectation has never been so important. Entwining with this (and it is true across the world) are additional political priorities, for example, in Great Britain facilitating the development of renewable energy sources, in Europe the development of cross-boarder interconnections and markets, and in the USA encouraging the much-needed investment in transmission.
