About the session
Net Zero targets achievement through the Underground Hydrogen Storage (UHS) in depleted oil and gas reservoirs and aquifers.
Dr. Prashant Jadhawar. University of Aberdeen.
Hydrogen utilization for the domestic and industrial applications will be instrumental for achieving the net zero targets in UK, thus contributing carbon neutral net zero economy. For
this, significant volumes of hydrogen will be required to meet such enormous demand.
Subsurface formations from the depleted oil and gas reservoir and aquifers in onshore and UKCS offshore setting can store such TeraWatt scale hydrogen volumes in peak shaving
mode, through the electrolytic conversion of surplus electricity from wind turbines (green hydrogen), thus allowing their year-round operations saving millions of pounds payment by UK
government. This presentation provides peek review of option of the hydrogen storage in the depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs and aquifers, process involved hydro-geochemical geomechanical and hydrodynamic considerations. Compositional reservoir modelling outcomes of our full field technical feasibility investigations to evaluate the operational and reservoir engineering performance of the underground hydrogen storage (UHS) in a deep aquifer will be presented with respect to effects of injection and production rates
number and length of storage cycles, and shut-in periods and effect of cushion gas type.
