Abstract

Kate is a degree apprentice in TV at BT Tower, studying towards a Bachelor’s degree in Digital and Media Solutions. Within the first month of her apprenticeship, Kate contributed to the success of the BBC’s next-generation broadcast network.

Since then, she has worked on various high-profile projects including implementing cutting-edge surround sound technology, Dolby Atmos, for the UEFA Champions League. She also provided the flight cabinet and equipment for a BT Sport truck to plug into, enabling the Premier League to be broadcast across the BT network.

Kate has introduced a new process to her team, which allows them to locate, store and manage knowledge-based articles. She’s also been part of the team that redesigned BT’s Apprentice Careers website.

Engineering was never a career Kate had thought about, until she undertook work experience in the procurement and TV departments at BT. From that point, she knew she wanted to be part of the constantly evolving innovations and solutions in the company, so she went straight from sixth-form into her apprenticeship.

In addition to her operational role, Kate is part of a small team working with senior staff, which looks to create a diverse workforce and inclusive culture. Kate has taken her discussions back to apprentices, encouraging them to step forwards with any challenges they have encountered, and giving them the confidence and know-how to overcome them.

Passionate about becoming a role model in STEM, Kate has already organised several events which have helped young people evaluate their career prospects.
