Abstract
Claire works at 3M’s Corporate Research Lab, where she is researching disruptive technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and computer vision to invent and engineer new products. She came up with her first major innovation during her PhD at Imperial College London, where she created computer vision algorithms to automatically diagnose arthritis of the knee from medical scans.
For this academic work, Claire was awarded 8 prizes, a fellowship with the Software Sustainability Institute (SSI), as well as two research grants to continue developing the algorithms for commercialisation. The most prestigious competition was held at the Houses of Parliament, attended by MPs and awarded by the RAEng.
As a child, Claire loved puzzles and mathematics. But it was only at university that she was exposed to coding and discovered a passion for computer science.
After completing her undergraduate degree, Claire joined an investment bank, where she developed professional skills as a software engineer. She used her free time to explore her research interests, before moving on to her PhD in computer vision and machine learning, then her current role at 3M.
Passionate about seeing more women succeed in technology careers, Claire co-founded and directed the London Chapter of the Geekettes.
She’s organised several sell-out events to get girls interested in technology and promote inspirational women in the field. One of her most memorable events was a hackathon for girls aged between 6 and 16, where they transformed ideas into reality using Scratch and Python. Claire also supports collaborators’ STEM events by presenting her engineering work at science festivals and evening events.
