Abstract
Amy is a Senior Site Engineer at Farrans Construction who’s worked on Northern Spire – the first new bridge to cross the River Wear in 40 years, with a budget of £117million.
She’s been part of the core construction team on the project, setting out, surveying and constructing sections of work, as well as managing subcontractors.
Amy first became interested in Civil Engineering after a visit to Lesotho, Africa, at the age of 17. Struck by seeing people living in houses built from impractical materials she returned home keen to find a career that would enable her to improve living conditions for others.
After graduating from the University of Nottingham with a First Class Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Amy joined UK construction and civil engineering company Sir Robert McAlpine. She worked on projects including the Nissan Manufacturing UK Battery Plant and Intu Eldon Square Shopping Centre, before moving to Amec Foster Wheeler and then on to her current role.
Since university, Amy has applied her skills and experience to voluntary activities. As a student, she created the group NUSTREAM, who set up a small-scale hydropower and solar scheme for a remote village in Malawi. The scheme provided lighting to local services and homes.
Amy also became involved with the Institution of Civil Engineers North East, acting as their Regional Education Coordinator between 2014 and 2018. As part of her role she created a Zombie Apocalypse Workshop and the Inspire Competition, which have reached thousands of students in the North East and inspired many to consider careers in engineering.
