Most politicians and scientists agree that the UK must significantly reduce its carbon emissions.
The question for us as engineers is not whether we should aim to achieve the overall targets, but how can we meet those targets?
Our ethical obligations mean that we should seek to do this as efficiently as possible, and to the extent that some of the targets are unachievable we need to explain this inconvenient truth, and provide alternative solutions to reach the overall CO2 reduction targets. What society cannot afford is for the lights to go out through a failure to deliver practical and timely solutions.
The lecture will examine the targets engineers are facing, and consider what might be possible in terms of achieving these whilst ‘keeping the lights on’.
