Parallelism has always been the key to increasing optical networks capacity, from single channel to WDM, from C band to ultrawide band, and in the future from single fiber between nodes to multi-fiber, i.e. multi-core or fiber bundles. Designing such networks may sound as simple as just adding fibers in the design tool. But how realistic and easy is that really? How many ports will nodes require in 5, 10 or 20 years? Can switching equipment, especially the wavelength selective switches, grow in terms of the degrees required in highly multi-fiber networks? If not, what are the consequences on the node architectures, and the trade-offs between scalability and network-related performance, such as blocking? How will the control plane scale? This workshop will leverage the expertise of operators to set the requirements, components experts to understand their limitations, node architecture experts to understand the options available to build high-degree nodes, network designer experts to lay out the trade-offs between node architecture options and network performance, and control plane experts to assess the impact on control layer scalability.
