Industry has been a leader in the deployment of smart connected technologies to reduce costs, save energy, and enable increased customisation. Major equipment manufacturers are putting their products online. Production increasingly runs with little human involvement, and machines even assist and monitor their human operators to improve quality. Software vendors seek to create value through analytics. Industry 4.0 is a vision for the ultimate, software controlled, infinitely flexible business. Who will lead this transformation: existing manufacturers, equipment vendors, software providers or new entrants? What role will wireless play in enabling it, and what barriers do we face?
