    Sir Julian Young

    Air Marshal Sir Julian Young retired recently from the Royal Air Force (RAF) after 40 years of Service as an Engineer Officer. In his last post he was Director General Air within the Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) organisation in the Ministry of Defence (MOD).In this role he led some 2,265 military and civilian specialists and was responsible of putting to work some £3.7 billion annually on equipping and supporting all of the MOD’s fixed-wing aircraft. In this role he concurrently was a member of the Air Force Board and the RAF’s Chief Engineer. He also had an MOD-wide role as the Defence Engineering Champion.Throughout his long career, Julian held a variety of in-command, manpower policy, operational, engineering, training, logistics and staff appointments, including Project Team Leader for the Harrier GR7/T10 fleet and on the Support Helicopter Force (Falkland Islands, Cold War Germany and Gulf War I).Julian’s first degree was in Air Transport Engineering, and he is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. He is also a Governor of Bath College and a Trustee of the RAF Charitable Trust. He was awarded a KBE in 2020, a CB in 2013 and an OBE in 2000.

    Professor Danielle George

    “As engineers and technicians, I think we all have a duty to talk about our passions to inspire the next generation.”Danielle George is Professor of Radio Frequency Engineering at the University of Manchester and a science communicator. Her expertise in radio frequency engineering and microwave communications is applicable to broad range of scientific and industrial sectors.She has worked with NASA and ESA on the development of instrumentation for researchers exploring the Big Bang. Her most recent work on broadband amplifier design at 116GHz is state-of-the-art and pushing the very limits of semiconductor technology.“For as long as I can remember I was always interested in science – from playing with my chemistry set as a child to studying things under a microscope. My passion soon branched out into astronomy after watching an eclipse with my family.”An ambassador for STEM, she gave the 2014 Royal Institution Christmas Lecture, co-founded and developed the Manchester Robot Orchestra as a citizen science initiative, has given TED and TEDx talks, and was awarded the MBE in 2016.“For me, it’s not just the legacy aspect, it’s about telling the stories of the incredible difference makers around the world who want to get involved and inspiring the next generation into solving engineering challenges.”

    Ella Podmore

    Ella Podmore is a Materials Engineer for luxury British supercar maker McLaren Automotive. She is responsible for all the material investigations in the business across all development phases of the company’s supercars; from concept drawings, all the way to customers in the field. Balancing her time between experiments and leading technical meetings, Ella created this department from the ground-up and plans to demonstrate the importance of materials in the automotive industry even further. As the leading STEM ambassador for McLaren, Ella helped launch the recent competition McLaren Automotive ran with BBC Blue Peter asking children to design their ‘supercar of the future’ and was one of Autocar’s Top 10 ‘Rising Star’ in 2019.
