Abstract

Session 2A - Enabling EV charging of Large Vehicle Fleets using DC microgrids, V2X and Megawatt charging

Enabling the electrification of fleets comprising a large number of small to medium size vehicles or smaller numbers of larger vehicles, presents hug challenges to fleet operators from the perspective of power capacity availability, energy costs and operational efficiency. Conventional Ultra Rapid chargers connect direct to grid, demanding from the grid a connection equivalent in capacity to that of the cumulative rating of the chargers themselves, whilst drawing energy only from the grid directly, and potentially at times when it is at its greatest cost. TPS will present how it is addressing these issues with Smart Fleet, a charging system that provides complete energy management flexibility through the use of actively managed DC microgrids with connected storage and generation to reduce the grid capacity required for charging whilst optimising energy costs for the user. The system and its Silicon Carbide powered sub-components are described including the high-power TPS’ Distribution Grid Inverter (LV connection), Solid State Transformer (MV connection) and high frequency isolated bi-directional DC supplied Velox chargers which facilitate, additionally, Vehicle to everything (V2X) exchange between all connected devices on the microgrid, including the 400 V or 11 kV grid. Industrial use cases will be cited, including the application of the equipment for CCS with V2X charging in refuse depots and ‘CCS charging for today’ with Megawatt scale ‘MCS charging ready ness for tomorrow’ to facilitate super-fast charging of Heavy Good Vehicles in, for example, distribution depots.
