Electromagnetic modelling of gapped ferrite inductors using finite element analysis in 2D

This presentation describes a specific modelling procedure which is valid to obtain the inductance of an RM (rectangular modulus) type ferrite inductor with an air-gap of large length. The computations are carried out by means of finite element analysis (FEA) in 2D, which leads to significant computational advantages over the 3D model. The effects of the gap-length on the magnetic flux and inductance curves are investigated. Experimental and simulated results from the linear and saturation regions are then presented.
