This presentation studies the starting, synchronization and steady-state characteristics of five line-start interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (LSIPMSMs). The overall performance of new and conventional types of LSIPMSMs with different rotor magnet shapes are analysed and compared. All the proposed LSIPMSMs have the same squirrel cage design, materials, stator and rotor slot geometry and stator winding design. In addition, the permanent magnets of all the motors have the same dimensions and are made from the same material. The starting and synchronization of the motors is studied under no load, full load and high inertia. In steady-state operation, the performance of sinusoidally-fed LSIPMSMs is analysed. The efficiency, power factor and torque ripple values are computed and compared under different load torque values. A 2D time-stepping finite-element method (FEM) is employed in the analysis of the performance of LSIPMSMs.
