Airfield Lighting and the Introduction of LED Technology. Part 1: An Introduction to Airfield Ground Lighting

This presentation delivers a short history of the development of airfield ground lighting (AGL) from the 1940s onwards, and discusses: the patterns seen by the modern pilot and the normal parameters of the constant current series circuit used to power such circuits; experience gained from the successful adoption of LED (light emitting diode) AGL fittings in both runway and taxiway lighting systems in the UK; and the integration into existing circuits and the opportunities presented for alternative power supplies for LED-only circuits in the future.
