About the session

A discussion on cross-discipline working and promoting understanding across professions

* An introduction to the design team and understanding their needs •

* Identifying value engineering opportunities and potential security challenges during the planning phase • An introduction to the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) guide to security engineering and design

* Promoting whole life planning and the importance of the user requirement •

* The importance of cross-professional sharing of ideas, knowledge, and understanding

When planning a new airport, power station or stadium it is essential that security is designed in at concept stage to ensure maximum operational effectiveness. When you add to this the adoption of BIM as a requirement on all UK publicly funded construction projects by 2016, then it is clear that there are challenges ahead for planning consultants, engineers, designers and architects that need to influence and specify security from the outset.

Leading speakers including Professor Jon Coaffee, University of Warwick, Dr William Pilkington, Cabarrus Health Alliance and Hugh Boyes, Institution of Engineering and Technology head up a dynamic programme. Key topics include:

• Cyber securing the built environment - exploring the BIM challenge
• Impact of terrorism on the design of urban areas
• Design and security considerations for intelligent buildings
• Benefits of the new security certification scheme SABRE
• Interactive panel discussion on security vs performance

    Luke Stevens

BB7, Senior Security and Blast Consultant

Luke is a chartered mechanical engineer whose security consultancy experience extends across the commercial, transport, financial, medical, cultural, educational, residential and industrial sectors at all scales. With six years’ experience working in counter terrorism, explosives and counter IED research for the Ministry of Defence and across the engineering sector. He brings practical experience of explosive charge design and weapon effects with a proven ability to quickly deliver on unfamiliar projects.Luke provides architects and designers with oversight of the likely challenges their projects will face in terms of security, so that they can embed security within each of the planning stages, allowing them to save time and money later in the project cycle. He has also developed innovative tools to allow visualisation of blast damage to facades in architectural CAD and works within the BB7 team to provide consultancy and design solutions that reduce risk to the facility, increases its value and enhance its enjoyment without the need for costly, inappropriate, bolt-on solutions.Luke also works with facilities managers and in-house security teams to improve efficiency and system effectiveness which allows for capital and operating costs to be reduced and an increased return on investment. Luke believes that security should add value to clients experience and not be endured.
