About the session

The digitisation of networks and assets is making huge volumes of data available to operators which, with the help of analytics could enable transformations in efficiency, performance and cost reductions. This seminar will explore what good looks like for the operation of a digital, data-driven network and uncover the most valuable source of data available to networks today.

Eric Brown, Head of Innovation, Energy Systems Catapult

Case study: smart metering data
Dan Hopkinson, Electralink

Digitising heat: the value of data for optimising assets and reducing carbon
Casey Cole, Guru Systems

Using asset health data to monetise risk
Ian Dunstan, senior asset manager, Wales and West Utilities

    Casey Cole

    Guru Systems, Managing Director

Having worked in low-carbon energy for 15 years, Casey has in-depth experience of making sustainability work in practice: technically, commercially and legally. He co-founded Guru Systems in 2012 in response to the lack of smart metering and monitoring systems for decentralised energy networks. He and the rest of the Guru team are passionate champions of the sector, searching out the barriers to progress and overcoming them with practical technology that’s easy to use.Casey is a seasoned speaker and is active across the sector, working with the government, large housing providers, ESCOs and developers to make heat networks and other onsite energy systems more sustainable and energy efficient. In November 2015, Casey was named Chair of the Board at Heat Trust, the customer protection scheme that sets out a common standard of quality and protection for the supply of heat on onsite energy networks. The Trust gives confidence to customers living in homes supplied by the schemes and provides a benchmark for best practice. He blogs at www.carbonlimited.co.uk and tweets at @CaseyGuru.www.gurusystems.com.

    Dan Hopkinson

Head of network and emi services, Electralink

Dan joined ElectraLink in March 2016 to focus on the development of the Data Transfer Network (DTN) and associated data services. Specifically, he concentrated on ensuring that the data transfer service would continue to be a high value solution for its users and that it would remain at the heart of industry processes, through constant innovation and excellent service performance. Prior to joining ElectraLink, Dan held senior operational management roles at both Siemens and G4S, focusing on the delivery of all elements of the metering value chain, from smart meter installation and data collection through to data processing. These roles enabled Dan to develop a clear perspective of the benefits of smart metering and the opportunities delivered through smart grid solutions.

    Eric Brown

Head of innovation, Energy Systems Catapult

Eric joined Innovate UK in April 2014 as Energy Systems Catapult Programme Manager. In this role he supported strategy development and planning and, in addition, led projects aimed at building early capability and presence for the Energy Systems Catapult.
