This presentation gives an overview of database-assisted access to white spaces in the UHF TV band and discusses: the mechanisms for the protection of licensed digital terrestrial television (DTT) and PMSE (programme making and special events) services; the UK regulatory requirements for the operation of white-space databases and devices; and the role of international harmonisation and standardisation. Finally, an update of activities in CEPT (Conférence Européenne des Administrations des Postes et des Télécommunications) and ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) is given.
