The development of energy storage is vital to the sustained operation of the UK’s busy grid network, carbon grid and transport system, maintaining supply and bridging the gap in peak conditions.

    Nick has been involved in technical innovation and research since 2003 across a range of different fields, from video processing and compression, to UK-tech, renewables & clean-tech industry research for a FTSE 100 corporate finance organisation.Now currently in the innovation arm of UK Power Networks, the UK’s largest distribution network operator; Nick has led a portfolio of projects covering smart grid communications, asset tracking and grid-scale energy storage. Most recently, Nick heads up the Smarter Network Storage project, leading a team which has designed and installed one of Europe’s largest battery energy storage systems to explore the economics of optimised operation of storage on distribution networks.

    Bernard Shelley has an original background in chemistry and food technology and has worked for a number of Blue Chip companies. Since 1992 Bernard has worked for British Standards covering areas such as biotechnology, coal, paints/varnishes and petroleum/energy. Bernard has extensive experience in managing National, European and International technical committees covering the major Standards Development organizations (ISO, IEC, CEN and CENENLEC),Bernard's current portfolio includes technical committees covering power generation/distribution, smart grid, smart meters and Electrical Energy Storage.

    Mick has over 40 years’ experience in the field of Power Systems working on Transmission & Distribution Projects around the World.He started his career in GEC Stafford and has also worked for ABB, Thales and Siemens. In February 2011, he moved to his present position with S&C Electric Europe Ltd. Where he fills a number of roles within the Company, including, Business Development, application support and technical advisor. Currently he is an active member of both the Energy Storage Network and the RenewablesUK Grid Strategy Group and has been recently appointed as the UK Representative on a CIGRE working group on Energy Storage. He also serves on a number of Grid Code Working Groups and is on the EASE Technology & Value Assessment Committee.

    Electricity Storage, Director Swanburton & Dir of Electricity Storage Network

    Anthony Price is a chartered civil engineer who has been working on electricity storage development, projects and policy for more than 21 years. He studied engineering at the University of Cambridge. Some years later he joined the Central Electricity Generating Board in 1988 and began work on an energy storage project which was developed by National Power, a successor company to the CEGB. In 2003 he founded Swanbarton Limited, a consultancy company specialising in electrical energy storage. He was a director of the Electricity Storage Association from 1997 until 2003 and established the Electricity Storage Network in 2011 as a trade association for the British Electricity Storage industry. He was Chairman of the Institution of Civil Engineers Energy Panel from 2007 until 2010. He has published a number of papers and articles on energy storage.

    Highview Power, Chief Executive Officer

    An electrical engineer, Gareth Brett has worked with Highview since 2006 and joined the Board to become full time CEO in December 2008.Gareth began his career with Southern Electric in 1977, where he led the development of three major UK independent power projects (IPPs). He has subsequently been involved in the development and successful execution of many IPPs in the UK, Europe and the United States, from the perspectives of owner, financier, operator and customer. These IPPs used a wide range of technologies including gas fired CCGTs, thermal coal plants, open cycle gas turbines, diesels, wind turbines and hydro plant (run of river and pumped storage, including Dinorwig in the UK). Prior to joining Highview full-time as CEO, Gareth was also Head of New Nuclear Build for British Energy.
