    Prof. William Webb

    William is CEO of the Weightless SIG, the standards body developing a new global M2M technology. He is a Director at Webb Search, an independent consultancy, and President of the IET.He was one of the founding directors of Neul, a company developing machine-to-machine technologies and networks, which was formed at the start of 2011. Prior to this William was a Director at Ofcom where he managed a team providing technical advice and performing research across all areas of Ofcom’s regulatory remit. He also led some of the major reviews conducted by Ofcom including the Spectrum Framework Review, the development of Spectrum Usage Rights and most recently cognitive or white space policy. Previously, William worked for a range of communications consultancies in the UK in the fields of hardware design, computer simulation, propagation modelling, spectrum management and strategy development. William also spent three years providing strategic management across Motorola’s entire communications portfolio, based in Chicago.William has published 13 books, over 100 papers, and 18 patents. He is a Visiting Professor at Surrey and Southampton Universities, an Adjunct Professor at Trinity College Dublin, a Board member of Cambridge Wireless, other oversight Boards and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the IEEE and the IET. His biography is included in multiple “Who’s Who” publications around the world. William has a first class honours degree in electronics, a PhD and an MBA. He can be contacted at wwebb@theiet.org.

    Dr Andy Harter is an innovator and entrepreneur. He is responsible for VNC software which allows remote control of one computer screen from another. The technology is on a billion devices, is on more different kinds of computer than any other application and is an official part of the internet. In 2002 he founded RealVNC which recently received its third Queen’s Award for Enterprise in three years.Andy was previously director of research and engineering at the influential AT&T Cambridge Laboratory. In 2010 he received the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Silver Medal, and in 2013 he led the team that won the Academy’s MacRobert Award. He has an MA and a PhD from Cambridge University, where he is a Fellow of the Computer Laboratory. He is Chairman of the Cambridge Network.
  • Dr Simon Hart

    Dr Hart specialises in motor and converter control and leads an international team as Principal Development Engineer with Emerson Control Techniques, a variable speed motor drive manufacturer. Simon has been an active member of the IET for over 20 years starting as a student member. He is currently a Trustee of the IET and is a former chairman of the IET Council and the Shropshire Local Network. Simon is a member of the Control and Automation Technical and Professional Network executive and a STEM Ambassador.

    Dr David Evans was previously a Senior Government Advisor at the Technology Strategy Board.David Evans has a long track record in developing policies and managing programmes to promote innovation and technology. As Director of Innovation in the Government Department responsible for innovation he prepared the Innovation Nation White Paper published in March 2008. He was also responsible for setting up the Technology Strategy Board as the UK’s innovation agency tasked with promoting innovation and technology in business and was its first Chief Executive.In his previous career in the Civil Service was responsible for preparing the first knowledge economy White Paper for the Labour Government and was also the DTI’s Finance Director. He has been a Board member of two Government Departments, a member of three Research Councils and was Deputy Chief Executive of the Government’s Small Business Service.He was also Senior Adviser Government Affairs for the Technology Strategy Board and a Board Member and Honorary Treasurer for the Science Council (which represents the interests of the UK’s learned scientific societies) and the chair of the Measurement Board which advised Government on priorities for the national measurement system. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the Imperial College Business School. He has a doctorate in theoretical astrophysics and qualified as an accountant in 2007.

    Peter Bonfield is Chief Executive of the BRE Group. A materials engineer with a PhD in wind energy and the design of turbine blades, Peter joined BRE in 1992 as a Senior Scientific Officer progressing to Director of the Timber Division and then Managing Director of BRE's Construction Division. Peter became Chief Executive of BRE in January 2007 and in January 2012 he took up the role of Chief Executive of the BRE Group of companies.Peter was on part-time secondment to the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) from 2006 until 2012, where he co-created the sustainable development strategy for the Olympics and supported its delivery. From November 2006 he led for ODA on construction products, playing a key role in ensuring that the significant quantities of materials required to construct the games were sustainably procured and delivered and performed as required.He is a Visiting Professor at Bath University, where he has also been awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Engineering. He is a Fellow of several engineering institutions and has been a Chartered Engineer for over 20 years. Peter is Chairman of the Health, Safety and Environment Committee of the Association for Independent Research and Technology Organisations (AIRTO).
  • Mr Nigel Ward

    Nigel Ward is a highly customer focused General Manager with broad technology management experience in the converged internet, broadcast and telecoms sectors. In 2004 he became a founding director of Schoolbacs Ltd, pioneering the use of online hosted/cloud computing applications in the education and event management sectors. Nigel’s early career was with the BBC and Sony, working on the introduction of digital image capture and recording, and later in strategic management roles, where he led the creation of a new European service/software business that was to have a profound effect on the future direction of the company. Later he became Operations Director for Thomson Broadcast as the company rolled out the national digital cable TV network across England on behalf of the franchise operators. Nigel is a committed and active IET volunteer. He brings a unique in-depth knowledge of the IET’s global presence gained through leading the operations and finance of the 120+ Local and Technical Networks as Chairman of the Communities Resourcing Committee. He is a firm advocate of the ‘One Team’ philosophy of volunteers and staff working together to play to each other’s strengths in making decisions and carrying them through to practical actions. He has played a key part in implementing tailored strategies appropriate for the IET’s presence in different parts of the world via the 5 Regional Community Committees and to boost Young Professional activity globally by championing initiatives such as Present Around the World. Nigel has continually strived to make the IET’s finances and decision-making processes more transparent and accessible to members. Nigel has served on a many of the IET’s Boards and Committees, with a particular interest in those relating to finance and resources. He is currently the Honorary Treasurer of the IET.

    Having graduated with first class honours, Alan Watts founded a company manufacturing automatic test equipment. After growing the company with venture capital, Alan then spearheaded the aggressive re-branding as Yelo Ltd leading to the successful acquisition by the Canadian Mindready group.Alan has been VP Marketing+Sales and General Manager of the acquired business unit employing a team of 50. After a period in a university spin-out developing innovative wireless medical devices, he restarted the moribund business angel network in Northern Ireland. Within 2 years angel investment reached £2m pa and Halo was voted the British Business Angels Association Business Angel Network of Year.Alan has always been active in the profession. For the IEE he has been Northern Ireland Branch Chairman and IEE National Younger Members Chairman. In the IET he has been a Trustee and Vice President as well as chairing the Membership and Professional Development Board.

    Naomi Climer is Deputy President and Fellow of the IET. Until March 2015, Naomi was President of Sony’s new global division – Media Cloud Services, based in Los Angeles, USA, with a mission to develop cloud based production services for all parts of the media industry worldwide.Previously, Naomi headed Sony’s B2B organisation in Europe (Sony Professional) providing R&D, Sales and Marketing, Systems Integration and Service covering diverse markets including media, broadcast, cinema, sports, security and healthcare.After studying at Imperial College, London, Naomi trained as an Engineer at the BBC and has worked in technical roles in BBC Radio, BBC World Service and BBC News as well as at ITV and in local radio.Naomi has become a well known thought leader in the Broadcast and Media industry internationally – winning the International Association of Broadcast Manufacturers (IABM) Broadcast and Media Technology Industry Woman of the Year award in 2014.Naomi has a strong interest in diversity issues and has been an active campaigner for gender diversity within Sony and within the engineering profession in the UK. As a result of this, Naomi was short-listed for a WISE Women of Outstanding Achievement Award For Leadership and Inspiration in 2012.Naomi has been an active contributor to the IET through the Communications Policy Panel and as a member of the Board of Trustees since 2010.Naomi has also actively engaged with the Southern California Local Network since 2012 and brings this international IET perspective as well as global industry experience to IET HQ in the UK.

    Nick Winser is the Executive Director, UK of National Grid plc and is also a Non-Executive Director of Kier Group plc where he Chairs the Safety, Health and Environment Committee. Nick was appointed as a Director of Way Ahead Support Services, a local charity for the disabled in Warwickshire, in 2011 and has also held the rank of Major in the Engineer and Logistics Staff Corps (RE) V, providing advice to HM Forces and the Ministry of Defence, since 2011.Nick joined the Board of National Grid in 2003 as Group Director responsible for UK and US transmission operations, previously holding the position of Chief Operating Officer of US Transmission since 2001. Nick joined National Grid in 1993 holding a number of managerial roles before become Director of Engineering in 2001. Nick originally started his career with the state owned Central Electricity Generating Board in 1983 undertaking a variety of technical and engineering posts including working at Heysham and Hinckley Point B nuclear power stations before working on the privatisation of the UK electricity industry in 1989 and, subsequently, joining PowerGen as a commercial negotiator in 1991.In 2013, Nick was elected as President of the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity and Vice President and Trustee to the Institution of Engineering and Technology Board of Trustees. He was elected as Chairman of CIGRE UK , the International Council of Large Electric Systems, in 2012 and Chairman of the Power Academy, an initiative set up to encourage people into engineering careers, in 2006.Nick holds a BSc in Electrical Engineering and is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, The Institution of Engineering and Technology, the Institute of Gas Engineers and Managers and the Energy Institute.Nick lives in Leamington Spa with his wife and three sons where, in his spare time, he enjoys cycling and reading and spending time with his family.

    Alice graduated with a BE(Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Master in Management Science from University College Dublin. She started her career in E.ON as an electrical test engineer before moving into R&D, focusing on low-carbon technologies. Subsequently she joined the asset management arm of E.ON and was responsible for implementing a new maintenance strategy across the UK generation fleet. Alice is now Engineering Manager for a newly commissioned 400MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plant in Slovakia.As an active member of the IET since 2004, Alice has made a significant contribution to promoting the Institution and engineering as a career, especially to students facing choices about their future. In 2006 she was seconded to the IET to present the Faraday Lecture in schools around the UK, Ireland and Asia. She has written for E&T magazine and helped to establish the IET Member News video service. In 2007 Alice was named the winner of the IET Young Woman Engineer (YWE) of the Year Award in 2007 and has sat on the adjudication panel in more recent years.

    Professor Will Stewart was previously the Chief Scientist at Marconi with wide interests in technologies from communications to bio sensing, he was educated at Imperial College (Physics). His personal interests have been in optical fibre communications and optoelectronics. Recent interests include microstructured photonic materials (photonic crystals), optical slow-wave structures, nanomechanical systems and the application of various optical, semiconductor and acoustic technologies to medicine, particle physics and industrial processes.He is a visiting Professor at University College London and at the Optoelectronics Research Centre at Southampton. He is author on some 64 conference and journal papers, including many invited papers, and on 48 patents. He is a member of the editorial advisory board for the journal Science.Will has been a member of the IET for many years. He has been a member of the Knowledge Management Board and Council and has chaired the Communications Policy Panel and also the panel that invites key speakers from industry and government to give IET prestige lectures.
