About the session

Professor Lionel Tarassenko, Chair in Electrical Engineering, the University of Oxford, will review the latest technology in both hospital patient monitoring and the remote management of individuals with chronic diseases, based on experiences at the University.

Digital solutions are built around a combination of sensors, computing platforms, algorithms and databases, and have had a huge impact on all industry sectors apart from biomedical engineering, until now.

Professor Tarassenko will provide a comprehensive assessment of the opportunities available to the industry and patients with new technologies such as sensors, wearables and webcams, as well as machine-learning algorithms.

    Professor Lionel Tarassenko

    University of Oxford, Chair in Electrical Engineering

    Lionel Tarassenko gained the degrees of BA in Engineering Science and DPhil in Medical Electronics from the University of Oxford. He then held a number of positions in academia and industry, before taking up an Associate Professorship in Oxford in 1988.He received a British Computer Society Medal in 1996 for his work on neural network analysis of sleep disorders. His research on jet engine health monitoring was awarded the Rolls-Royce Chairman's Award for Technical Innovation in 2001 and the Sir Henry Royce High Value Patent Award in 2008. Professor Tarassenko is the author of 180 refereed publications, 170 conference papers, 3 books and 27 patents.
