Abstract

Discover the latest technology, design and maintenance of offshore wind turbines and farms to optimise transmission and safeguard performance for increased capacity input. Offshore wind as a renewable energy source is recognised as an important resource for our infrastructure and investment into the substantial deployment of this green energy is increasing. With this investment into offshore wind energy and turbine farms Round 1 and 2 projects largely under construction and the much larger Round 3 projects now in a planning phase, the question still remains on how we best optimise transmission and operation on these developed offshore sites for this crucial renewable energy resource The London Array project put the UK into a leading position for wind energy in 2013 and has increased our capacity in the supply chain and from this we know there are key areas that need to be addressed in order for us to maintain a high level of power generation and quality and make best use of our network. This IET seminar, in collaboration with RenewableUK will examine the key technical componenst in operation and management, technology requirements and risk management and mitigation in offshore wind technology and transmission.

    Prof. David Infield

    University of Manchester

David joined the University in 2007 as Professor in Renewable Energy Technologies. Together with colleagues, a considerable wind energy research activity has been built up since then. Over the past five years I have been Manager of the Doctoral Training Centre in Wind Energy Systems, delivering four year PhDs with a considerable training element; this has now been extended into the Centre for Doctoral Training in Wind and Marine Energy Systems for which I play a leading managerial role. My teaching is mainly to these Doctoral students although I also supervise Undergraduate and Masters student projects across a range of renewable energy related topics. My main responsibility outside the University is as Editor in Chief of the IET’s Renewable Power Generation journal.
