Abstract

How spectaculars on stage are supported by electronics, mechanical engineering, software and, increasingly, complex networking.

Balancing arts and engineers in a high performance creative environment; Many people believe that arts and sciences are mutually exclusive. Nothing could be further from reality: modern entertainment is substantially reliant on engineering to deliver the storytelling tools that society needs.

Have you ever wondered how spectaculars on stage are supported by electronics, mechanical engineering, software and, increasingly, complex networking?

With artists wanting to make each show bigger and better, and audiences demanding “Instagrammable-moments”, the live entertainment world demands ever more audacious engineering. This presentation will look at how engineering disciplines familiar to IET members contribute to the world’s biggest spectaculars, will examine how some effects are achieved, and how engineers from a variety of disciplines (including software, hardware or networking and cyber) all co-collaborate on work around the world in venues as varied as theatres, cruise ships, theme parks, opera houses and arenas.
