This presentation discusses the early days of telegraphy and telephony from 1837 to 1912, from Cooke and Wheatstone’s analogue electric telegraph device, Morse and Vail’s telegraph system, the growth of UK telegraphy, Bell and telephony, the social impacts, the Telegraph Acts, the National Telephone Company (NTC), nationalisation in 1911 and the first automatic exchange in 1912.
