We are all familiar with manned control centres - human operators are the key for detecting breaches and facilitating response. Such control centres include many loosely integrated sub-systems, thousands of cameras and sensors where video is used for 'naïve' monitoring and for chronological post-mortem investigation. This involves multiple infrastructures (co-ax, fibre, Cat5, twisted pair, etc), resulting in information overload and inefficient use of security. Today, digital video technology is enabling video via IP convergence, with an end-to-end IP network for unified infrastructure. There is no longer the need for a dedicated video control room - every desktop in the enterprise can accommodate tight integration with other security systems to enable a 360-degree view. Digital video is changing the role of the human operator. It is used for enhanced data accessibility and improves security operations.
