About the session
4b1 - SOLSPACE: delivering global clean energy services from space
Colin McInnes, James Watt Chair, Professor of Engineering Science (Systems Power & Energy), University of Glasgow, UK
The work of the SOLSPACE project will be presented, providing an overview of the utilisation of orbiting solar reflectors for the delivery of global clean energy services. Constellations of reflectors in polar orbit can reflect sunlight onto large terrestrial solar power plants before sunrise or after sunset, augmenting their output and extending their utilisation. The opportunities and challenges of orbiting solar reflectors will be discussed, including orbit selection, reflector design and economic analysis. The SOLSPACE project is supported by an Advanced Grant from European Research Council.
