Energy Storage

Without widespread implementation of long duration energy storage (LDES) at suitable scale, durations and locations, the energy transition is likely to be unaffordable, unreliable and fragile. This presentation looks at each of the main challenges and how it can be addressed:

• Grids needing to more-than-triple in size, to deliver energy;

• And double again for the hydrogen economy;

• System operation costs rclimbing exponentially;

• Vast excess spend on grid-connected assets;

• Energy bills rocketing as cost per MWh of energy drops;

• Widespread black-outs continent-wide during times of system stress;

• Inability to deliver many services such as Black Start.
