This paper identifies the major railway subsystems and howthey are affected by an electrification programme.Management activities to ensure the objectives are met willbe described for the whole life cycle from the initial intentionto electrify through design, installation, commissioning andoperating to renewal/ decommissioning. The consequences oftreating electrification as just an “add on”, rather than anintegral part of the railway, will be explored.
