    Nick Winser

    Energy Systems Catapult, Chairman

    Nick Winser’s career within the energy sector spans over 30 years, culminating in his recent appointment as Chairman of Energy Systems Catapult. Catapult is the UK’s technology and innovation centre established by Innovate UK to support companies and the Government in developing products and services to address the new commercial opportunities created by the transformation of UK and global energy systems. Prior to his appointment, Nick served on the Board of the National Grid becoming its UK and European CEO in 2011.His extensive experience of the sector resulted in his election as President of the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (2013-2015) and his Chairmanship of CIGRE UK, the International Council on Large Electric Systems. Currently Vice President and Trustee of the Institution of Engineering & Technology, Nick will assume the role of Deputy President in October 2015. Previously chair of the IET’s Membership & Professional Development Committee, Nick is chair of both the Finance & Investment Committee and the Power Academy. Additionally, Nick has a professional interest in the construction sector, having been a non-executive Director of Kier Group since 2009. Nick was awarded a CBE in 2014.

    Ofwat, chief executive officer

    Cathryn Ross became Chief Executive of Ofwat in October 2013. Before that she was Executive Director of Markets and Economics at the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR), where she led the latest rail regulatory review and was responsible for ORR’s work in the areas of access, competition and consumer policy. Cathryn is an experienced regulatory and competition economist and has worked across a number of different sectors advising on economic, regulatory and competition issues. She has served with the Competition Commission, and has held board-level positions at the Office of Rail Regulation, and previously at Ofwat. She was Director of Markets and Economics at Ofwat between 2008 and 2011.

    Dermot Nolan has recently been appointed as Chief Executive of Ofgem. He was previously a member of the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) and became Chairperson in May 2011. His responsibilities at the CER included the regulation of retail gas and electricity, the Single Electricity Market (SEM) and the Commission’s Smart Metering project. Dermot Nolan completed his PhD in Economics at Yale University before lecturing at the University of London for five years, specialising in the areas of market structures and firm performance. He joined the Competition Authority in 2001and was manager of its merger division for most of his time there. He became Senior Economic Adviser at the Commission for Communications Regulation in 2005.
