About the session

World energy consumption continues to grow at an unsustainable pace, and whilst Energy Efficiency has been the focus of national and international government regulation and initiatives for many years much more needs to be done. To date the approach to energy efficiency measures has tended to be piecemeal and driven by cost and carbon savings. Energy efficiency is clearly a cross function, cross theme, cross sector and cross energy type activity. The potential for improvements in each sector through the application of existing technologies and future developments is less well defined. This IET technical session at the EPE conference in 2015 gave context to energy efficiency measures and opportunities, in order to highlight existing good practice and future opportunities.

Bill Drury

Bill Drury obtained a First Class Honours degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1976 and a PhD in 1980. He became a Chartered Engineer in 1984, and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology in 1990.He has worked for over 30 years in the Engineering industry in a variety of senior positions for Siemens, Rolls-Royce and Control Techniques, a £200M sales company with 2000 employees worldwide, where he was Technical Director for 18 years. Control Techniques is part of Emerson a $30bn US company. He is a Technical Advisor to the President of Emerson / Control Techniques as well as holding advisory and consultancy roles with other Engineering companies.He has strong links with a number of UK Universities in many forms. He is Chairman of the Industrial Liaison Committees at Bristol Universitys. He became a Visiting Professor at Manchester University in 1997, and is a Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor of Innovation at Bristol University. He is a Visiting Professor and an external examiner at Newcastle University. He is a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology Academic Accreditation Committee. He has chaired several International Conferences in the field of Drives and is currently Industrial Chairman of the 2012 IET International Conference for Power Electronics, Machines and Drives. He has more than 60 publications to his name and is the editing author of “The Control Techniques Drives and Controls Handbook” which is published by the IET, and co-author of "Electric Motors and Drives" which is published by Newnes.He was Chairman of the Steering group behind the UK government Power Electronics strategy document - “Power Electronics: A Strategy for Success – Keping the UK competitive” published in October 2011.
