Tutorial - Tu.A.1.T Large Scale Silicon Photonics for Applications such as Optical Switch, Image Recognition and Optical Beam Steering
Ming C. Wu University of California, Berkeley
High-radix optical circuit switches (OCSes) are increasingly used in AI/ML supercomputers and datacenters to enable reconfiguration of the optical networks. The benefits include added flexibility and resilience as well as optimizing network topology for applications on demand. This tutorial will introduce the key trends of optical interconnects for datacenter networks and machine learning systems and the benefits of reconfigurable networks. They will be followed by a comprehensive overview of various switching technologies that are scalable to high-radix (> 100) OCS, including 3D MEMS and other free-space optical switches, silicon photonic and other integrated switches generally known as 2D switches.
