About the session

The gas mains replacement programme improves safety and reliability of supply and reduces leakage whilst extending the life of assets.  This seminar will explore the latest approaches and technologies available to deliver improvements to assets, whilst examining efficiencies in replacement activities to minimise the impact and disruption to customers.

    Appointed in 2013, Rob Long is Programme Director for Wales & West Utilities Ltd. with responsibility for the safe delivery of WWU’s replacement programme during the 2013-2021 regulatory period.Rob began his career training as a QS in the construction industry before joining Walter Lawrence Civil Mechanical as a Supervisor. During this time, Rob managed a number of large projects based across the UK for clients such as National Grid, Severn Trent Water and Bristol Water.Rob joined Amec Foster Wheeler in 1999 as a Project Manager working on major gas and water replacement projects and in 2008 was appointed as Alliance Manager to head up WWU’s replacement programme.

    Jonathan Holvey

    Health and Safety Executive, Head of the Gas & Pipelines Unit

    Jonathan Holvey joined in HSE in 1990 as a trainee factory inspector and spent the first part of his career in the Northwest based out of HSE’s Manchester office. During this time he focussed on the regulation of health and safety in the plastics, rubber and textile manufacturing, including a two year period in a chemicals group prior to the formation of HID. He moved to London in the late 90s where he gained experience in printing, fairground safety and local authority inspection. The latter led to a secondment to HSE policy unit dealing with the regulation of local authorities in the early 2000s. He then managed a HSE general inspection team covering northwest London 2004 – 2009/10. Then in 2010-13 he worked on loan to the DWP providing advice to the Minister of Employment where he was involved in the Government led Lofstedt and Triennial Reviews and subsequent implementation. He then re-joined HSE as the Head of Operations for Eastern England in 2013, before taking up his current post as Head of the Gas & Pipelines Unit in March 2015.

    Kate Grant

    National Grid, Innovation Delivery Manager

    Kate Grant heads up the National Grid Gas Distribution Innovation Team. Kate has a background in large infrastructure delivery and has previously worked as a Project Manager on the Heathrow Terminal 2 Project and the London 2012 Olympic Games. Kate has also worked for E.ON as a Programme Manager, leading the UK R&D programme on energy efficient technologies and applications. Kate graduated from the University of Cape Town with a BSc degree in Electrical Engineering. After working for Eskom on the construction of a gas turbine power station, Kate completed an MPhil degree in Engineering for Sustainable Development at Cambridge University.Kate is passionate about accelerating innovation in the gas industry and driving long-term value for customers. She believes that the cornerstones of success are open collaboration and communication with new and existing partners.

    Lois joined Utility Week as a news reporter in January 2015 and to cover the gas and electricity transmission and distribution networks. She became News Editor in Spring 2016, and now reports on the water sector.

    Helen Berry

    Health and Safety Executive

    Helen Berry joined HSE in 1991 as an analytical chemist working on the biological monitoring of exposure to hazardous substances. In the mid-90s she moved into a risk management role spanning the Health and Safety Laboratory’s diverse range of work, then in 1998 she successfully applied to join the factory inspectorate. In 2001 she returned to HSL as a Business Development Manager, then in 2004 she moved back into a front line inspection role working on the regulation of high hazard onshore chemicals establishments. She took up her current post in HSE’s Gas & Pipelines Unit in 2011.
