About the session

This presentation discusses management of the challenges and opportunities posed by cognitive radios. Topics discussed include: using cognitive radios to achieve greater efficiency in the use of the newly available frequency spectrum; White Spaces in the unused TV band; exploring the evolution of White Space devices to compliment the offerings of existing Wi-Fi / Internet providers and extending their range of operation to provide reliable, low cost, broadband services in rural areas; developing a spectrum sensing algorithm to enable cognitive radio to co-exist with the licensed users, while ensuring the complete protection of the incumbent user; integrating the features of cognitive radio with spectrum sensing, spectrum management, spectrum mobility and spectrum sharing into a single device, at both IC and system level; justifying the radiowave frequency constraints imposed on devices operating in the TV band; and looking ahead to the new class of devices in future wireless communication systems coupling cognitive radio with Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) to provide reliable and flexible spectrum usage.
