We discuss transmission issues in achieving long-haul SDM transmission using mode division multiplexing (MDM). Key MDM transmission techniques that we have recently developed are also reviewed. Their applications for optical MDM transmission are experimentally investigated with linear filter adaptation techniques including the affine projection algorithm.
