About the session

Converting AC circuits to DC operation

The increase in the number of devices used in buildings, that are based on semi-conductor technology and therefore rely on low voltage direct current to power them, has encouraged the emergence of single point rectification and distribution systems which can be made more efficient, through effective design.

These replace the growing number of localised low efficiency power rectifiers. The savings in energy efficiency and reduced localised heating through the removal of high l²R losses are of growing interest to building services designers and engineers.

Further efficiencies will be realised as alternative supply systems such as photovoltaics, are fed into direct current systems thereby eradicating losses introduced through inversion and later rectification.

Improvements in cost, energy efficiency and power quality are key drivers for global development and adoption of DC energy systems, based on both standardised and proprietary solutions. With this, good design, installation and operation practices remain key to successful implementation.

The Code of Practice for Low and Extra Low Voltage Direct Current Power Distribution in Buildings will help designers, installers and operators ensure the safe, effective and competent application of cabling/wiring installations for low voltage direct current power distribution in buildings.

    Brian T. Patterson

    EMerge Alliance (via skype), President

Throughout his career, Brian has been deeply involved in the electronics industry, managing product engineering, sales, marketing, licensing & operations in both domestic and global assignments. Before joining Armstrong in 2003, he held senior positions with Kollmorgen Corporation, AMP Incorporated and Tyco International. He has several patents and patents pending in the fields of fiber optics and power/signal technology. He has also held guest professorships in business management at Long Island University and Susquehanna University. In his role at Armstrong, Brian leads new business development efforts that bring the division together with like-minded partners in new collaborations aimed at improving commercial buildings, such as his work with the EMerge Alliance.
