This contribution deals with the view of electrical utilities regarding the application of modern relays and digital control system in substations It covers the benefits including reliability improvement, opportunity for new functionalities and cost reduction. It also presents the drawbacks mainly related with maintenance procedures and personnel training. As a conclusion, future trends and requirements from the utility side are proposed.
