    Space Syntax, Associate Director

Ed Parham is a chartered Architect and joined Space Syntax in 2006. Ed has been leading Space Syntax Limited’s work on the development of Integrated Urban Models to support the processes of Planning and Urban Design. These models aim to test the combined impact of infrastructure systems by linking spatial networks with public transport, land use, demographic and economic datasets. In many parts of the world, growth over the past 30 years has created cities where these urban components are uncoordinated. This has led to outcomes which include over-reliance on the private car, congestion, dependence on fossil fuels, and social severance. In places it has also fuelled rapid informal growth, bringing further problems with it.Integrated Urban Models have been applied throughout design projects to help understand the impact of potential urban change for City residents. These impacts include measuring access to employment opportunities, education facilities, health services and public transport for all residents. By studying the combined impact of proposed changes to a city’s infrastructure, multiple scenarios can be tested and the strongest outcome for the city residents selected.
