Abstract

This is an extraordinary time to be an engineer - engineering and technology is continuously developing new ideas that will benefit society, individuals and the world.

There are many universal challenges ranging from the really big questions such as how this planet can support expanding populations, to practical problems in improving efficiency within a team. Engineers are at the heart of these questions as creative problem solvers with the skills to resolve global issues.

Research tells us that the next generation are motivated by doing something meaningful and giving back more now than ever before. We are faced with a vast array of significant and critical problems to solve that are in need of a diverse and driven group of engineers.

The new incoming IET President, Naomi Climer, will use her President’s Address to showcase some fantastic examples of new technology and ideas across all of the IET sectors including built environment, energy and transport.

She will observe how these changes in technology will alter business and economic models and what affect these will have on the likely careers of future engineers and technologists.

Naomi will discuss the effect of the Internet of Things on emerging technologies and the impact this will have on the balance between large corporates, SMEs and individual entrepreneurs.

It will change the barriers of entry for those considering engineering careers from the early apprentices to career professionals.

Throughout the lecture Naomi will explore how the IET plans to support engineers and will challenge the audience to consider the part they could play to engineer a better world.
