CB OBE BSC MA MSC MDA CENG FRENG FIET FRAES CCMI HONFAPM RAFThe Chief of Materiel (Air) is the senior officer responsible for delivering Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) outcomes in the Air Environment alongside other senior people from the Royal Navy, Army and Civil Service who focus on the other Defence Environments.Air Marshal Julian Young was appointed Chief of Materiel (Air) within DE&S in April 2016.He leads an organisation of some 1,950 military and civilian staff with the responsibility of putting to work an annual budget of around £4bn on equipping and supporting all of the Ministry of Defence’s (MOD’s) fixed-wing aircraft, and is the delegated Airworthiness lead for all MOD-operated aircraft.He also is the focal point of contact within DE&S for the RAF, is a Member of the Air Force Board and Chief Engineer (RAF). Dr Julia Sutcliffe

Julia is currently Head of Engineering at BAE Systems covering the design and development of Training Systems for Pilots and Technicians.Her team deliver simulators, classroom systems and increasingly VR-enabled capabilities to the RAF as well as to a large number of customers and Air Forces overseas.Following a degree and PhD in Physics at Nottingham University, Julia joined British Aerospace and has held a number of different roles within the business including Chief Engineer, Chief Mission Systems Engineer and Design Authority for the UK MoD Taranis UCAV demonstrator.Julia has travelled extensively within her career and spent 10 years in Australia as the Technical Lead for Autonomy and Data Fusion where she worked closely with the Royal Australian Air Force and the Australian Army on a range of experimental flight test programmes.Julia is a Chartered Engineer and became a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society in 2012. She has three children and is passionate about encouraging girls and women into engineering and volunteers with a number of organisations on this theme. She is also an Outlink UK Ally.
