ESA's GOCE spacecraft was launched on 17 March 2009. The two T5 ion engines were switched on for the first time two weeks later as part of the spacecraft commissioning procedures. Both engines successfully operated and are now controlling the mission to the fine thrust required. The larger T6 ion engine is under development for the ESA mission to Mercury, called BepiColombo. The mission can only be achieved using this novel technology.
