Abstract

The IET Faraday Medal was established to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the first Ordinary Meeting of the Society of Telegraph Engineers. It is the most prestigious of the IET Achievement Medals, it is awarded for notable scientific or industrial achievement in engineering or for conspicuous service rendered to the advancement of science, engineering and technology or for lifetime achievement. The Award is made without restriction as regards nationality, country of residence or membership of the IET. Recipients of the award are chosen by the IET Awards and Prizes Committee and are endorsed by the IET Knowledge Management Board. Professor Christofer Toumazou FRS FREng FMEDSci FIET FIEEE FCGI FRSM, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Imperial College London, UK, has pioneered and invented new microchip technologies for personalised medicine. In particular, he invented and licensed Portable and Rapid Semiconductor Genome Sequencing. Another invention stemming from his research is SNP-DR, a portable device that decodes a patient’s DNA within minutes. For this, he has been named the European inventor of the year (2014) by the European patent office. In recognition of his wider achievements he became the first Regius Professor of Engineering at Imperial College London appointed by Queen Elizabeth II during her Diamond Jubilee.
