About the session

The Future Power System Architecture (FPSA) project was commissioned by the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) and undertaken through a collaboration between the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Energy Systems Catapult. The collaboration has built upon a shared commitment to respond effectively to the challenges presented by the energy trilemma: decarbonisation, security of supply and affordability..

    Duncan currently holds the posts of Managing Director at Global Smart Transformation Ltd based in Scotland and Director of the European Utilities Telecom Council based in Brussels. In these roles he works closely with customers, academia, industry, government and regulators to deliver innovative technical solutions to market challenges. Recent experience includes Smart Grid and Smart City development in Europe where he has been at the interface between government and industry. He also provides mentoring and business acceleration services to several Small and Medium Enterprises in the UK. His previous roles included Business Innovation and Growth Director at Parsons Brinckerhoff, Executive Chairman of the Scottish European Green Energy Centre, Managing Director ITI Energy and Head of Technology & Business Development at ABB. He has over 35 years’ experience covering the complete spectrum of technical and commercial roles from apprentice to boardroom.He is a past visiting professor at Imperial College London and currently a visiting professor at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. He is an active member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and is involved in many influential panels, advisory boards and committees both at a National and European level. He was a founding member of the National Skills Academy for Power.He is IET Energy Sector Chair and is an active member of the IET Energy Policy Panel, member of the Advisory Board for UK Energy Research Council (UKERC), a member of the European Commission Smart Grids Taskforce, a previous Vice-Chair of the European Technology Platform for “SmartGrids” and a founding member of the UK Government’s Smart Grid Forum. He has been named as one of the top 40 influencers in European Smart Grids and continues to help shape thinking in the energy sector.

    Millhouse Power Limited, Member of the Energy Policy Panel

    In January 2016, Dave formed his own limited company, Millhouse Power Limited, offering consultancy services to the electricity sector, specialising in smart grids, asset management, strategy and innovation.Dave has served in the industry since 1966, beginning his career with East Midlands Electricity Board before moving to Eastern Electricity in 1973. Since then he has served with TXU Europe Distribution, 24 Seven Utility Services Ltd, EDF Energy and UK Power Networks. His career has involved roles in operations, planning, regulation, asset management and research & development.Dave serves on a number of industry forums and working groups including the Smart Grid Forum, the IET Energy Policy Panel and The ETI Smart Systems and Heat Programme Strategic Advisory Group. He is currently Vice Chair of the Future Power System Architecture Project Delivery Board.Dave holds an Honours Degree in Electrical Power Engineering. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce.

    Philip is the Energy Systems Catapult’s head of practice, power systems and has been closely involved with the Future Power System Architecture Project.Philip studied engineering at Cambridge University, being sponsored by the local electricity distribution company. He transferred to the CEGB and, on privatisation, joined National Grid. In 2015 he left and started working with the Catapult.His career has covered real time control, operational planning, and leading field staff, as well as commercial roles. Within National Grid he led projects examining how Britain can meet its 2050 carbon targets and the changes required in grid operations by 2020.

    Dr Simon Harrison

    Mott MacDonald, Group Strategic Development Manager

    Simon Harrison is group strategic development manager, at global engineering, management and development consultant Mott MacDonald, which gives him a pan-infrastructure perspective including energy, transportation, water, the urban and built environment, and the increasingly pervasive role of information and telecommunications in infrastructure systems.His career has been spent primarily in the electricity sector, where he has played a key role in developing renewable, thermal and nuclear power, and power transmission and distribution businesses, including opening a number of new geographic and sector markets. His active interest in energy policy has led to him directing a number of key studies in the UK and elsewhere. He has also taken a leading role in many privately financed generation projects as well as privatisations and acquisitions on five continents. Prior to this he undertook planning of national, regional and industrial electricity transmission and distribution systems.A former Vice President, he chairs the IET's Energy Policy Panel, and most recently the Future Power Systems Architecture Project, a collaboration for the UK government between the IET and the Energy Systems Catapult. He is IET representative and Council member of the Parliamentary Group for Energy Studies. He contributes widely to industry publications and broadcast media.He holds BSc and PhD degrees from Southampton University and is a visiting professor at the University of Southampton. He is a Fellow of the IET and of the Energy Institute.

    Mike Kay

    Mike Kay is an experienced director of an electricity network business. He is a chartered electrical engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). His expertise and experience covers all aspects of power engineering associated with the distribution and transmission of electricity, and also the economic regulation of network utilities.He chaired the Distribution Code Review Panel of Great Britain for 14 years, and led on interface issues with National Grid for the GB Distribution Companies collectively for the same period.He is active in many industry forums and over the last decade has led the development of standards for connecting renewable and other generators to the GB distribution system. He has chaired the Engineering Committee of the Energy Networks Association, co-ordinating the technical policy approaches of the GB Distribution Companies. Mike worked for Electricity North West for more than 30 years. In that time he has been responsible for many engineering and regulatory aspects of Electricity North West’s business. In his role as Network Strategy and Technical Support Director he was responsible for specifying and securing the capital investment programmes in the Distribution Price Control Reviews of 2010 and 2015. In this role he was also solely responsible for Electricity North West’s Information Technology investment and services.
