Abstract
The Energy Union is a major project aiming to provide the vision and the means for a competitive, secure and low carbon energy system.
To achieve such objectives it is necessary to put in place the most adequate policies, to make best use of available energy resources, and to employ the best available technologies. This applies to improving energy efficiency, more energy efficient power and heat generation, and building smart distribution, transmission and storage infrastructure.
Solutions need to be effective and smart at local level, while supporting the political objectives and targets agreed at EU level. A common legal framework and improved infrastructure are therefore essential. It should allow the flow of energy and services across Member States while encouraging also the better use of local resources and integrated approach in operating the energy networks (being electricity, gas or heat).
This lecture will highlight the important role the UK plays in building the internal energy market, both in shaping its architecture, in increasing the energy trade and in developing innovative sustainable energy solutions. It will explain the support the EU provides for such initiatives through its Horizon 2020, Connecting Europe Facility, Structural and Investment Funds and the European Fund for Strategic Investments. And furthermore, it will expand on the collaboration on EU level and how it promotes synergies amongst the innovation leaders in Europe supporting industrial competiveness and economic growth.
