A practical and reliable cooling solution for a high-power-density, high-speed synchronous permanent magnet machine (PMSM) for an aero engine starter generator system is proposed. Commercial software packages based on lumped parameters network method and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are employed to identify the optimal cooling configuration. Other existing cooling techniques are also investigated and their performance compared.
